論文投稿時によくある誤解4つ。直訳はしません。
フォーマットがエディターの決定に影響する？
Wrong. Often, I see papers submitted in an all ready-to-publish format, and it's clear that a lot of hours were put into the aesthetics of the paper. But all of this hard work, while appreciated, won't impact the editor's decision. The science is what matters, not the paper's appearance.
- 誤りである。ジャーナルのフォーマットに完璧にあわせて投稿するのは時間の無駄である。決定には関係ない。論文の見た目ではなくサイエンスそのものが大事。
Tip: What is important for submission is the general article format. Other requirements such as character count, figures, and journal-specific rules should be loosely followed. This can assist the editors in understanding why the format was chosen. A good rule of thumb is to ask yourself: if you were a reviewer, would you be satisfied with the information provided? Is the manuscript clear and logically ordered?
- 全体としての論文フォーマットが大事。文字カウント、図、ジャーナル特有のルールにはゆるく従うべき。これによって、なぜそのようなフォーマットを用いたのか、エディターが理解しやすくなる。
- 好ましいrule of thumbは、自問自答してみることである：もしレビュアーなら、論文内で提供された情報に満足か？原稿はクリアで論理的に整合的か？
カバーレターは長ければ長いほど良い？
A cover letter is required for submission, but it shouldn't be a dissertation. I've seen authors bury the significance of their paper in a lengthy letter. It's understandable; after all time spent in the lab, it's tempting to try and capture every detail. But editors value cover letters that are to-the-point and concise. Tell us what's important about the paper, how it's relevant for the journal, and what the take home message is.
- カバーレターは投稿に必要である。しかしそれは論文であってはならない。
- 長ったらしいレターに論文の重要性を埋め込む*1著者も散見される（気持ちはわかる）。
- 研究室で過ごした長い時間を鑑みて、あらゆる詳細をキャプチャしたくなることだろう。
- しかしエディターは、的確なカバーレターを重要視する。
- 論文の重要性、どういう意味でジャーナルに適切か、そしてメッセージは何か。これらをエディターには伝えること。
- Tip: 最高のカバーレターはシンプルで、謙虚なものである。
推奨されたファイルサイズは、目安でしか無い？
File size is important. When processing manuscripts, the first thing a Journal Associate looks for is the submission size. If it's too large, the process is halted. As a convenience to authors and reviewers, we require the combined submission PDF be under 20 MB. If not, the paper is returned to the author for changes. Often times, the trouble is in the figure files. It's important that both reviewers and editors can easily download the submission without clogging up their bandwidth.
- ファイルサイズは重要。原稿のマネジャー達はこれをまずチェックする。大きすぎると処理は滞る。全部あわせて、PDFにして20MB以下でないといけない。
- 20MBを越えると、著者に原稿は返される。
- だいたいは、サイズオーバーは図のせいである。
- 査読者や編集者が容易にダウンロードできることが大事。
ファイルがたくさんあるとプロセスが速くなる？
It can be confusing to know which files should be uploaded during initial submission. One of the most common questions I get is do the highlights and eTOC blurb file, graphical abstract, conflict of interest form, STAR Methods section, and Key Resources Table need to be provided?
- どのファイルを投稿すればいいのかはよくわからないことがある。最もよくある質問は、ハイライト、eTOC blurb、graphical abstract、利害相反ステートメント、… なども投稿する必要があるのか、というものである。
The answer is no. The only required materials for editorial consideration are a manuscript and a cover letter. Whether provided as a combined manuscript or separate files, it doesn't matter. The important part is that the submission includes information the editors will need to make a decision.
- 回答はNOである。エディターに必要なのは、原稿とカバーレターのみである。投稿されたものが単一のファイルだろうが、複数のファイルだろうが、問題にならない。重要なのは、エディターが判断を下せるだけの情報が、投稿ファイルに含まれていることである。
*1:埋葬する、つまり殺してしまう、というのは言い過ぎか
